Fed: Aurora Australis departs Casey to help trapped ship
CANBERRA, Dec 28 AAP - Icebreaker Aurora Australis today left Casey station to help
the stranded Antarctic supply ship Polar Bird at Prydz Bary, 5,000 km south-west of Hobart.
Polar Bird became stranded in pack ice earlier this month and weather conditions have
not allowed it to continue on its journey to carry supplies to Australian Antarctic stations.
Aurora, which is three days ahead of its regular schedule, will take about six days
to complete the 1,500 km journey west along to coast to meet Polar Bird.
The Australian Antarctic Division today said thick ice would prevent the icebreaker
from reaching the stranded ship any sooner than late next week.
